Description
This is Space Launch Complex 34. Hallowed ground for America's Space Program. It was at this pad, sitting atop a Saturn 1B rocket, that the Apollo 1 capsule had the three astronauts, Grissom, White, and Chaffee die in the first NASA tragedy involving the loss of an astronaut in the line of duty. This set back the Apollo moon program many months, and placed in serious jeopardy the goal of landing American astronauts on the moon by the end of the decade.
